Nearly 1 in 2 women have high breast density, which both increases breast cancer risk (by up to 6 times) and makes diagnosis more difficult, causing around 50% cancers to be missed during routine screening mammograms. However, density is difficult to measure, meaning that most women are unaware of their breast density. NPL is proud to introduce sona - the world’s first safe, simple and low-cost technology for assessing breast cancer risk in women of all ages. Sona is a potential spin out from the world leading National Physical Laboratory (NPL), where scientists have developed, tested, and patented several unique technologies for breast density assessment through automated, novel ultrasound measurement. This simple, portable device provides an affordable assessment in under 5 minutes, and is radiation-free making it suitable for use in young women. Sona will be made accessible at GP surgeries, pharmacies, local health clinics and retail health hubs. In combination with other risk factors, this technology will offer millions of women underserved by current screening practices with personalised and actionable breast health advice.
