Russian gas will be supplied to British homes and businesses in the coming days after Shell delivered a cargo from the country to a port in Wales yesterday.

The tanker carrying Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) with an estimated value of more than £100 million was able to arrive in Britain legally because the government is yet to block Russian cargoes, despite new laws to bar Russian ships.

The delivery came as wholesale gas prices rose to all-time highs in Britain, some 12 times higher than a year ago, with fears that Russian gas supplies to Europe will be disrupted. The increase threatens to send energy bills to more than £3,000 a year, analysts have said.
