National Grid has been forced to delay the publication of cabling plans for connecting offshore wind farms after the government raised concerns about opposition from MPs.

The company’s electricity system operator division had been planning to launch its “holistic network design” yesterday, setting out its recommendations for developing Britain’s power networks to accommodate the planned expansion of offshore wind.

Kwasi Kwarteng, the business secretary, and Jonathan Brearley, Ofgem chief executive, had been due to attend the National Grid division’s control room in Wokingham, Berkshire — an event that the system operator unit executives had told staff was “a significant endorsement at the highest level of government for the work we have been doing”.
