  • Basic, clean site 10 minutes' walk from Newborough village
  • An hour's walk from Newborough beach and Ynys Llanddwyn
  • Great views of Snowdonia and dark skies for nighttime stargazing
What a spot – family-run Isle of Anglesey site Maes Tywyn Campsite is in a splendid setting with peaceful surrounds, easy access to walks and beaches, and village amenities less than a mile away. This nifty location is a 10-minute trot from the little village of Newborough (or Niwbwrch if you’re practising your Welsh lingo) – there’s a pavement all the way along the road so you should have a safe enough saunter to the village’s café, chip shop, convenience store or pub. If you’d like your eats even closer you can either light up a barbie or meander along to the great fish and chip shop half a mile down the road. Getting out to the rest of the island is a cinch from here: there are plenty of places to walk in the surrounds (perennial fave spot Ynys Llanddwyn is an hour away on foot), and you can get to even the most far-flung beaches with a drive of half an hour or so. Fancy ditching the car for a day? There’s a bus stop a short walk away for buses to Bangor and beyond. Back at base, peaceful times are very much encouraged – there’s heaps of space to chill out here with gorgeous views towards Snowdonia by day and a fab array of stars overhead after dark (clouds permitting, of course). There’s also a playground for the small sorts to scamper about in; and it’s been cleverly kitted out with benches for restful parental supervision.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Everything was thought through, as young campers I imagine our needs are slightly different but it felt like Terry and Jane hadn’t missed a trick. Really thoughtful , considerate and excellent hosts. Everything was clean , well organised and really professional. Couldn’t ask for anything more if even if I sat down I thought about it all day.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Really great site. It's tucked away but still really accessible. They've got loads of stuff you don't always get on a site, like playing cards, board games and fridge/freezers. Shower block is nice and the pressure and hot water was great. We were there when it was super quiet (during Storm Angus) - we've got a great tent and used the car as a bit of a wind block - had a surprisingly good sleep! Whole pitch is super flat and the owners couldn't have been friendlier. Would definitely stay again.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We stayed at this site for two nights during a planned walking holiday around parts of North wales and Anglesey. We loved the shower facilities, lovely hot water and the covered sink area was great for washing up. We had really variable weather being Autumn with lovely dry days for walking but heavy showers at night which meant we made use of both the enclosed kitchen area to prep our food and the covered washing up station. The owners of the site were really thoughtful and checked in with us during our stay to confirm we were ok with the weather in our tent which was holding up well. We didn't have a chance to use because of the weather but they also had available to borrow many washing machine fire pits which we loved. We loved how close the site was to the local shops, pub and chip shop. Although were weren't visiting Anglesey for long we loved how close the site was to Traeth Llanddwyn which meant we were able to go for a swim both days. I will be recommending this camping site to my friends and family and would love to come back and stay again next time we visit Anglesey.

Liked: Loved the location of this campsite, we had a lovely long walk through Newborough forest and along Newborough beach. Peaceful campsite, helpful owners and decent sized pitches. Facilities are great, lovely clean toilets constantly stocked with toilet roll. A brilliant little building for washing up your pots/pans etc. There is also a lovely little chippy close by which is always a winner. 10/10 would come again. 😁

Liked: Level pitches, tree boundary to fields breaking the site up into sections and providing some shelter from wind

Disliked: Payment for showers a little irksome

From the manager: Thanks for the great review. It's very much appreciated. Just one point of fact regarding our showers. There isn't and hasn't ever been a charge for showers, so it may be that there's confusion with another site. Kind regards. Jane and Terry.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Well run site with very friendly, helpful owners who are themselves campers so there are many helpful touches like a kettle, microwave, freezer, fridges etc. Dog friendly and in great location near beach and woodland walks. Highly recommended.

Disliked: Sharing uni sex facilities may not be to everyone, but were fine for us.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Flat pitches, small number of people on the site, warm showers, fridges to keep food in-and a freezer for ice blocks. Terry and Jane are very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely return again 👍

Disliked: Noisy group on the first night, (but I always travel with ear plugs as I am a light sleeper and you never know if your neighbours will snore 😜so I didn’t really hear them) but I believe Terry spoke to them and they weren’t noisy the second night.

Liked: Nice small site, friendly, Facilities were handy too, like little brick building for fridges, sinks and sockets. And another out hosue building for washing he dishes! And another building for loos and showers. Being a solo female it's really important to feel safe and here I did. The owners were lovely and accommodating on the phone too 🏕️✨😊 also WiFi was good to have to plan my cycling route the following day 🙌🏻🙌🏻🚴‍♂️

Local attractions

If you only see one attraction on Anglesey it really must be Ynys Llanddwyn, the little rocky outcrop named after the Welsh patron saint of lovers. The best way to get there from the site is to head out on foot, walking to the lighthouse and ruined chapel through the Newborough Forest. Pack a picnic to scoff on next-door Newborough beach, and perhaps bring binoculars in case any seals are swimming in the area. Should you have a bit longer (and really you should), there’s plenty more to keep you busy around the island. Family days out include pony rides and animal feeding frenzies at Foel Farm (10 minutes’ drive), getting to know the sea-dwelling critters at Anglesey Sea Zoo (10 minutes) and viewing the vintage vehicles at Tacla Taid Anglesey Transport Museum (five minutes). If you’ve a head for history, take days out at Beaumaris Castle (25 minutes), Plas Newydd House and Gardens (15 minutes) or the ruins of Aberlleiniog Castle (half an hour), or scooch back over to the mainland to the castles in Caernarfon (25 minutes), Conwy (35 minutes) and Criccieth (50 minutes).
