  • Adults-only site with spectacular views of Dee Estuary and the Wirral
  • A 25-minute drive from Chester and 40 minutes from Liverpool
  • A five-minute walk from a 16th-century inn
They say mighty holidays from little acorns grow… For a truly mighty break then, settle in for peaceful days and nights at Acorn Holiday Luxury Glamping Pods, an adults-only site in north Wales 25 minutes’ drive from Chester. The site is well-placed for coastal explores – it’s about 20 minutes from the Wirral, the nearest sandy beach is at Talacre (also 20 minutes) and the long-distance Wales Coast Path can be reached less than 10 minutes. Prefer walks to be a little less salty? There are trails within five minutes at Halkyn Mountain, and the Offa’s Dyke Path starts 25 minutes from the site. For a different kind of two-legged transport, turn to pushing pedals along National Cycle Route 5, which zips right through the local town of Dolphin. The 372-mile route connects Holyhead and Reading, and passes through Oxford, Chester and Bangor along the way. If this tickles your fancy, the secure bike storage on site may be an added incentive to make this a stop along the way. Time to put feet up, fill up and rest up after lengthy rambles and rides? This is a top spot for basking in peace. It’s a kid-free zone, so you'll be staying in a calm and quiet meadow with views of the Dee Estuary and the Wirral – ideally experienced from private hot tubs on private decks, while making the most of hot eats fresh from the handy gas griddle. (Decks are covered with a perspex-topped pergola too, so rain won't stop play either…)

Butterfly camping pod (hot tub)

Liked: Liked everything, from the cosy room to the flowers in bloom. It's cleanliness and it's fabulous finesse, A place so tranquil and quite picturesque, not too far from attractions around, conveniently a short drive away from a little village and shops, which is sound. St Winifred's chapel was a visit worthwhile, a very interesting, spiritual and pretty little place, you couldn't help but walk out feeling blessed after drinking water from it's famous well, full of grace. Overall we had a wonderful time, a time to relax without life's hustles and bustles , whilst gaining comfort in the pristine hot tub full of bubbles. The hosts were ever so kind, and we thank them for making our get away an extra special time. This place is a super, little find, I'd recommend it to anyone, especially those who seek to leave their cares and troubles behind so that they may embrace the peace and what nature has to offer and most of all to relax and unwind.

Disliked: There was nothing to dislike

Local attractions

Historians (amateur and professional) should be best pleased with this particular spot… It’s well placed for dives into the past: explores of Rhuddlan Castle and Bodrhyddan Hall, pilgrimages to St Winefride’s Well (in the aptly named Holywell town), and rambles around Greenfield Valley Heritage Park’s industrial-era factories and Basingwerk Abbey ruins are within 20 minutes’ drive, and there’s a 16th-century inn five minutes’ walk from base. Further afield, there are more historical abodes to be visited – Gwrych and Conwy castles are within about 30 minutes’ drive, and Speke Hall, Garden and Estate and the Hardmans’ House are 45 minutes away – and cities with storied pasts are easily reached at Chester (25 minutes), Bangor (50 minutes) and Liverpool (40 minutes). Outdoorsy and nature-filled days are within easy reach too. For animal encounters, take the plunge below the water’s surface at Blue Planet Aquarium (20 minutes) or Rhyl’s SeaQuarium (25 minutes), or pay a visit to the wild creatures at the Welsh Mountain Zoo within half an hour. Hours among pretty flowers and looming trees can be had at Ness Botanic Gardens, 25 minutes from base, or at Bodnant Garden (35 minutes), and Eryri/Snowdonia National Park is 50 minutes away.
