  • Woodland park site in Mid Wales, five mins' drive from Builth Wells
  • Half an hour's drive from Elan Valley; 40 minutes from Brecon Beacons
  • Communal kitchen, pizza oven and firepit; games room and playground
Well-earned rest or Royal Welsh Show, hiking the Beacons or bookshop mooching... it’s all here. Here’s a spot fit for royalty, a five-minute drive from Builth Wells, home of the Royal Welsh Show. Celtic Woodland Holiday Park is close to town, but surrounded by 10 acres of wooded parkland; you’ll feel both away from it all and at the centre of everything. There’s a lot on site to ensure your stay’s a comfortable one, much of it handily packed into a single hub. There are bathrooms with a walk-in shower, and everyone has access to the fridge and microwave oven in the communal kitchen and the firepit and pizza oven outside. The hub is also home to a games room, with pool, table tennis and air hockey, as well as a stock of books, magazines and DVDs. For those with an urge to hurtle about, the kids’ playground has swings and slides for the smallest guests and a wooden fort for the larger ones. Those itching to get out and explore Mid Wales can hit trails through the surrounding woodland; head into Builth Wells, meanwhile, and you can walk paths along the River Wye as far as the mouth of the river in Chepstow, 136 miles away (although perhaps best not to attempt that in one day).

Cabin (family, woodland)

Liked: A lovely set up everyone was very friendly. The view from our pod was amazing and would have been lovely sitting out on the dec with a bbq in the summer. Quite hilly and paths were quite slippery when raining heavy we all had walking boots so wasn’t too bad. Facilities was very clean and my son enjoyed the games room. We enjoyed the games they supplied in the room for something to do in the evenings. Good location.

Disliked: We had quite a steep ramp up to our pod when it rained the decking on the ramp got very slippery.

Cabin (family, woodland)

Liked: Its quite when no kids are shouting

Disliked: The toilet block was screwed shut The paths were poorly mentioned so the were very slippery The bed was the most uncomfortable I've had in a pod / cabin. No electric in pod which wasn't mentioned on booking The small gas burner would constantly go out when cooking One of the blinds was broken It was a considerable walk to the toilet in the main hub if needed in the night when needed .there is no running water in cabins and this is also not mentioned. Dogs are ment to be on leads but they're own dogs can run free and intimate your dog

Liked: Lovely owner and nice to see the family all working together

Disliked: I felt like the pitch up advert to what you actually got was very misleading There’s no tv, fridge, electric and microwave in the pod. The picture shows a tv in the pod also but not there on arrival

Cabin (family, woodland)

Liked: we liked the stay, we had a nice bed, and the little wood burner kept us very warm. We enjoyed the common room, good facilities, and warm water. We liked the fairy lights and the views and we enjoyed the facilities (kettle, stove, crockery and cutlery) in the cabin itself, I don't know how it would be during summer (we visited in mid November) We loved the little trinkets you could buy and the honesty little market shop. I personally liked that we could not park close to the cabin (although it was only 5 m to the left of our cabin Bedw) as it helps with the illusion of wilderness.

Disliked: I think the cleanliness of the common kitchen could be improved. It wasn't terribly bad, but could be better, the rest of the main commonplace was fine.

Local attractions

The annual Royal Welsh Show draws crowds to Builth Wells every July, but there are events at the showground throughout the year. Whether the circus is in town or not, it’s a place worth wandering, as well as being stocked with pubs, eateries and supermarkets: pick up a picnic and make for The Groe, a fab riverside park to scoff your sandwiches among views of the 18th-century Wye Bridge. For bigger walks, along with mountain biking, angling and nature spotting, head half an hour to the Elan valley, an area of lakes, hills and rivers dubbed the Welsh Lake District. To see nature close up, visit the Red Kite Feeding Station in Rhyader (25 minutes from site) to see an array of hungry raptors swooping by for their rations. The peaks and moors, waterfalls and castles of the Brecon Beacons are similarly handy for day trips. To see the heights without the huffing and puffing, head an hour’s drive to Pant for a seat on the Brecon Mountain Railway. Equally doable in a day are the beaches, watersports and coastal walks around Aberystwyth, an hour and 20 minutes away. If you're more into surfing the bookshelves, it’s half an hour to Hay-on-Wye, home of the famed literary festival and some two dozen booksellers.
