  • Scenic glampsite in the Galloway hills with pretty sea views
  • A five-minute drive from Gatehouse of Fleet; 45 minutes from Dumfries
  • On-site restaurant; views over the Bay of Fleet and Solway Firth
Looking for a top-notch mix of activity and zen? Settle in for active hols at GG’s Yard, a family- and dog-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Gatehouse of Fleet in Dumfries and Galloway. Home to the well-reviewed Gather restaurant, which serves up a great variety of meals, this site comes with some stunning views over the Bay of Fleet and Solway Firth. For adventurous explores, traipse off site for wanders through Galloway Forest Park (20 minutes) and the Galloway Hills, or make tracks for one of the five 7Stanes mountain biking centres within an hour’s drive – Kirroughtree is the closest, 20 minutes away. When it’s time to unwind, indulge in some eats at the restaurant, then retreat to the individually decorated and cosy-themed snugs (which have king-size beds and en-suites) to make the most of the huge windows and French doors – and hot tub, if the snug has one – by taking in the views towards the Big Water of Fleet or engaging in some stargazing. It’s dark-skies country up here after all…

Local attractions

No need to go too far to kick Scottish hols off right, as castles, scenery and golf are all within handily easy reach: the nearest castle (Cardoness) is just five minutes’ drive away, it’s 20 minutes from base to 18 holes of championship golf, and views are as easy as looking out the window. For a touch more history, make tracks for Threave Garden and Estate (20 minutes) and Castle Kennedy Gardens (40 minutes), the former in the grounds of the 19th-century residence Threave House and the latter in the grounds of old castle ruins. If longer journeys aren’t an issue, the 13th-century moated triangular castle of Caerlaverock, the looming ruins of Sweetheart Abbey, and the spectacular and sprawling Drumlanrig Castle are all within about an hour. Return to present-day adventures a little closer to home base with an afternoon at Cream o’ Galloway, 10 minutes away – it’s got ethical dairy cheeses and ice cream to try (and buy), as well as go-karts, trampolining, nature trails, and wildlife to meet. Prefer a more urban experience? The town of Dumfries is 45 minutes away and is a top spot to visit for galleries, museums and a handful of worthy Robert ‘Rabbie’ Burns sites, and the city of Carlisle and its castle, cathedral, museums, pubs and restaurants is roughly an hour and a half from the site.

Liked: We loved our stay at GG's yard - we are both vegan and really enjoyed a lovely meal at the restaurant of vegan haggis nachos! We also loved the decor in our wooden lodge which was marine themed! The location was perfect, near mossyard beach and the view was amazing. All in all a perfect christmas gettaway!
