  • Campervan pitches in a meadow with fell views near Penrith in Cumbria
  • A 15-minute drive from Ullswater and Keswick; overlooks Blencathra
  • Dog-friendly; laundry and washroom; direct access to walks and cycling
Washroom & laundry, dog friendly, walking and cycling direct from site One for those of you who prefer to be (almost) alone among majestic landscapes of fells and hillsides, Near Howe’s small number of well-maintained grass campervan pitches are on a wild meadow with a backdrop of glorious Cumbrian countryside near Penrith. The site is within the Lake District National Park, and walkers and bikers will be pleased to hear that a number of footpaths and cycling routes can be accessed directly from the camping field. The owners have secure bicycle storage – cyclists just need to ask for the key. Should you be on holiday with your canine chums, there is a dedicated dog-wash area so you can rinse off the mud after soggy walkies. To ensure the safety of your fellow guests and local wildlife, please keep an eye on your dogs at all times and always pick up after them. So that’s the dogs all clean. Keep yourselves neat and tidy in the modern amenities block with a hot shower, toilet and wash basin shared across the pitches, and keep everything else looking spick and span thanks to the washing-up sink, washing machine and tumble dryer (there’s an additional charge for the last two). If you need rainy-day distractions, there are books and games to borrow in the laundry room too. Please note: due to Near Howe’s pitches being in a hilly rural location at the top of a gravel track and with a narrow gateway to negotiate, only campervans up to six metres in length can be accommodated.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Beautiful scenery and wonderful view towards Blencathra from all pitches. The grass pitches are in a row, so unobstructed views in front and trees and owners garden behind. Friendly and informative owner. Very clean facilities. Games available for children. Good recycling system. Fire pit allowed, as long as it’s off the grass and fully contained. Walking and cycling direct from site. Pub in the nearby village is walkable if you’re able bodied. It serves food but check times as shut on 2 days a week. There was a menu and opening times pinned to a wall in the utility room. Local area leaflets available too. Also on site were some self catering cottages that looked nice.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Second visit to this site. If you prefer feeling like your wild camping rather than crowded camp this one is definitely worth a visit. No tents or motor homes. 5 campervan pitches in a massive green paddock with views of the mountains and the summit of Blencathra . Shower block is modern and immaculate and the owners always pop over to introduce themselves and chat. Well positioned at mungrisedale . I will definitely be returning

Disliked: Nothing.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: I was travelling from Wales to Scotland and this was a perfect 2 night stopover, not too far off the M6. Great view from the field, lots of great walks nearby (Recommend Great Mell Fell and Gowbarrow Fell) plus good farm shop up the road. Friendly owners. It's true there is only one toilet but it was very clean and I never had to wait (only one other van while I was there!) Would recommend, I'll likely be back.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Awesome view, very quiet. Polite and friendly owners.

Disliked: If someone is in the shower, toilet is also engaged untip they come out as only one bathroom. If loo and shower separate it wouldn't be an issue.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: We stayed for 2 nights, campervan pitches 3 & 4. Beautifully kept site. Fabulous facilities. Amazing views and very tranquil. Whilst only one bathroom, the site only offers 5 pitches. The shower was clean, large rain shower with plenty of hot water. Couldn’t have asked for more. Definitely recommend- hidden gem
