  • Luxury glamping site 20 minutes' drive from Carlisle
  • Direct access to the Hadrian's Wall Path and other walks
  • Well-equipped pods with ensuite bathrooms and private hot tubs
A little bit of luxury and a lot of peaceful space in a quiet corner of rural Cumbria? If that sounds like a most enticing mix, head to Headswood On The Wall, a glamping site five minutes’ drive from the little market town of Brampton and 20 minutes from the city lights of Carlisle. The wall mentioned in the site’s name is none other than Hadrian’s Wall, and with jolly good reason too: there’s direct access from here to the mighty Hadrian’s Wall Path, which follows the World Heritage Site for 84 miles from coast to coast. If that’s not enough walking, plenty of other paths can be accessed directly from the site: it’s all rather heavenly for travelling dogs (and their accompanying owners) who need a bit of fresh air and leg stretching. Hadrian may have grabbed much of the glory, but he wasn't the only Roman who left bits of stuff behind: three fab forts at Housesteads, Birdoswald and Vindolanda are also all within a half-hour drive. Other days out nearby might take you to the Lake District or up into the Scottish Borders, both of which are within an hour’s drive. After a day full of activity, it’s back to your smart and cosy wooden pod, kitted out with a comfy double bed, ensuite bathroom, TV, wifi and well-equipped kitchen. Luxury bed linen and towels are provided, and there’s space to eat inside or out on your deck. And the crowning glory of all this? Each pod has its own private hot tub to soak away any aches – bliss after a day of hiking...

Local attractions

This area’s not all about what the Romans built – it was a most scenic part of the world way before any of them set foot in the land. Still as pretty as ever are strolls in the Talkin Tarn Country Park (10 minutes' drive), the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (15 minutes) and the Lake District National Park (40 minutes). Keep your peepers peeled as you wander and you may just spot a large bird or two gliding through the sky – if you don’t happen upon any, make a visit to the Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre (25 minutes) where you can sign up to have them land right there on your arm. For something a bit different, slope off to see the planes at Solway Aviation Museum (10 minutes) or take the car up to Carlisle (20 minutes) to visit the castle and Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery or climb the walls at the Urban Adventure park.

Hadrian’s Wall camping pod

Liked: Lovely clean pods in a stunning location, lovely walks around the pods and Roman ruins sites close by. Village close by with some shops, co op and a Chinese. Owners very lovely and welcoming with the welcome pack in the pod a lovely touch to give you an idea of things to do and amenities in the area. Lots of thought has gone into making the pods a very special place to stay. Lovely quiet location away from main roads. Would definitely stay again! Hot tub an added bonus. Bring some spare towels though as the floor in the pod will be damp when in and out of the hot tub.

Hadrian’s Wall camping pod

Liked: Spectacular views and location, the host Simon was so friendly and greeted us on arrival with a towel and blanket for the dog. We walked miles everyday and would happily come and do them again. The pods are beautiful and clean very spacious too!. The hot tub was perfect for soaking away after our walks whilst the boxer dog slept peacefully. Well thought out layout with plenty of cooking facilities and utensils. Can not wait to visit again

Disliked: Not a dislike but a suggestion to have coffee and tea within the pods we missed our morning brew
