One of those random mornings... I was live on BBC Radio Cymru this morning on behalf of Swimathon discussing the recent finding that only 16% of children in Cardiff can swim… I was able to tie it in with the positive Swimathon weekend we just had: 🎉 Just over 10,000 swimmers took part across the UK - up from around 7,800 last year 🎉 Fundraising for Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and Marie Curie UK has already hit £1 million and is increasing daily It was an absolute pleasure to be part of this event for the second year in a row - this time seeing the Marketing campaign through from strategic planning to implementation and now the evaluation. What’s even better than achieving those numbers is meeting the swimmers behind the numbers, attending Swimathon sessions over the weekend I met: 💙 People taking part for the first time, who’d learnt to swim in the last year 💙 People swimming in memory of loved ones lost to cancer 💙 A swimmer taking part to celebrate her life, as she’s had a cardiac arrest 4 years ago to the day 💙 People using it as training for Ironmans and Triathlons 💙 Families taking part together, with children swimming 5ks! 💙 Swimmers just wanting a challenge It’s a privilege to have ‘work with meaning’, and honestly, one of these days I will sign up for Swimathon, or another challenge that helps to raise money to fight cancer, as family members continue to battle against the horrendous disease. On this day last year, we launched the inaugural Jets & Bears NFL Girls Flag League, and I saw 120 girls from 9 schools join a sport that 95% of them had never played before. Watching them grow through that league was inspirational. 2nd year now upon us, and yesterday we welcomed over 240 girls to the 2024 launch event for the new league - expanding to 24 schools. It was incredible to see so many girls return from last year and a whole bunch of new faces, most of whom had never touched an American Football before. Incredibly proud of the team for pulling this one together. We had an on-field session of Flag Drills, with our awesome coaches guiding the girls on the first step of their journey, and added in a few combine stations to put them to the test. Off-field, the girls got to experience a multitude of activations - 360 booth to create & share some fire content; mosaic board capturing all their faces to paint up the league logo; photos of last year’s league for returning girls to look back on and new girls to look forward to; a gallery wall of inspirational quotes from women in sport, and opportunities for the girls to sign into the league and write in their thoughts; a journalism session to explore the wealth of opportunities within sport, and of course a meet and greet with some special guests, alongside some cornhole and shuffleboard games! We were also able to brand up the AFC Wimbledon Locker room, to give that experience to these girls, to show off their kits with all participating teams. Topped off with one girl from each team changing into the kit and being cheered out of the tunnel to the pitch by their teammates. Incredibly proud of this one, a fair few late evenings with Andrea Calles Smith were needed, this was such an important opportunity for so many people and a personal passion for both of us to get just right. Looking forward to seeing the growth of these girls within the sport again, and proud to play a part in it. 10 weeks into 2024 and it blows my mind what the team and I have produced! The most recent being the one I am most proud of. In collaboration with the New York Jets and Chicago Bears we launched our Girls NFL Flag Football League in London. We've seen a nearly 100% growth from it's inception one year ago. On the 7th of March, we welcomed 200 girls at AFC Wimbledon with on-field drills and activations plus engaging experiential elements off-field. I'm delighted to be playing a part in female empowerment through youth sport and helping grow female participation in this great game 🏈 .... and the best is yet to come! Other projects I've been able to support on: ⚡ Marathon Academy Run + Yoga with Nike and The Outrunners Charity 🔊 Own the floor sessions with Nike 🛩 Pro Bowl Trip with Team UK with NFL UK ⚽ Pre-Match Member Zone with Nike and Chelsea Football Club None of the above could have been done without the amazing people I get to call colleagues (and friends) at Playmaker Experiential! As we wrap up with our training days for the academic year let’s look back at some of the highlights we’ve achieved. 🏈Over 400 teachers, coaches, students and volunteers trained in our Introduction to NFL Flag CPD. 🏈Reaching new areas in Cardiff, Edinburgh, Croydon, Merton, Southampton, Liverpool, Barnsley, Bradford City FC Community Foundation Richmond, Brent, Bromley, Preston North End Community and Education Trust and Wrexham. 🏈 Trained 6 new Foundation partners across Manchester (Foundation 92 BSCA (BOLTON SOLIDARITY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION) LIMITED) Birmingham (Pitch 2 Progress Saathi House Sport4life Ltd ) and the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation. 🏈Increasing our work in universities including Leeds Beckett University University of Worcester University of Nottingham Sport Solent University and Cardiff Met Sport. Huge effort from the team Toshane Boyce Chris Long PhD Shifa Avcin-Martelly and many thanks to Playmaker Experiential in supporting our development of other coaches. Attention now turns to finding our latest NFL Flag Schools National Champions 🏆
