About us
The Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) is the trade association for the civil nuclear industry in the UK. It represents more than 250 companies across the UK’s nuclear supply chain. The diversity of NIA membership enables effective and constructive industry-wide interaction. NIA member companies have significant expertise in nuclear decommissioning and clean-up, with 18 nuclear sites in the UK currently being managed through the process. We believe nuclear energy is essential to meet the UK’s clean energy needs. Together with renewables and energy efficiency, nuclear can reduce carbon emissions. As part of a diversified energy mix, nuclear-generated energy provides safe and reliable electricity for UK homes, hospitals, schools and industries.

What a busy week our membership team is having!😮 ⬇️ 👩🏭 The 2024 theme for the Women in Nuclear UK event in Manchester was #pushforchange. Throughout the day speakers and delegates discussed tangible actions that organisations and institutions need to initiate in order to reach the ambitious target of doubling the number of women in the industry to 40% by 2030. 🦾 The Robotics and Automation Conference was hosted at the wonderful MTC - Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry this week. There were a great number of delegates in attendance varying from large organisations to SMEs, all there to network, discover routes to adoption, and gain support in their own automation journey. 🚛 The Nuclear Institute’s RAMTrans 2024 nuclear transport conference and exhibition at the Pullman Hotel in Central London rounds off our adventures… for this week! The three day conference and exhibition has explored the nuances, challenges, and necessities of effective and innovative nuclear transportation systems. The agenda boasted of a truly international overview of global solutions, giving this conference a feeling of international collaboration. 😮💨 What an extraordinary week! We have plenty more events that we are attending, supporting, and hosting over the next two months - keep your eyes open for us! #conferences #nia #events #netzeroneedsnuclear

We are heartened to see this Supreme Court ruling: Sizewell C is absolutely vital to UK energy security, and it will be one of the greenest infrastructure projects ever in the UK. It will generate enough clean power for 6 million homes from a quarter of square mile of land, all while creating thousands of skilled jobs right across the country. #netzeroneedsnuclear #nuclear #energysecurity #sizewellc
Delighted to announce that the Supreme Court has today notified us that they have REFUSED to hear the legal challenge to the Sizewell C development consent order (court order below). This is the end of a long road - the original challenge having been filed by Together Against Sizewell C (TASC) in August 2022 in the High Court, and then heard by the Court of Appeal in Nov 2023 (the challenge being dismissed by both courts). The Herbert Smith Freehills team is thrilled to have been involved throughout - from the earliest stages of the DCO application many years ago to today's outcome. This is a great step forward for UK energy security and Net Zero. Congratulations to the whole SZC team and thanks in particular to my colleagues Charlotte Dyer and Leon Culot for all their hard work, and barristers Harry Philpott KC and Hugh Flanagan.
