About us
The Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) is the trade association for the civil nuclear industry in the UK. It represents more than 250 companies across the UK’s nuclear supply chain. The diversity of NIA membership enables effective and constructive industry-wide interaction. NIA member companies have significant expertise in nuclear decommissioning and clean-up, with 18 nuclear sites in the UK currently being managed through the process. We believe nuclear energy is essential to meet the UK’s clean energy needs. Together with renewables and energy efficiency, nuclear can reduce carbon emissions. As part of a diversified energy mix, nuclear-generated energy provides safe and reliable electricity for UK homes, hospitals, schools and industries.

In Morecambe, Lancashire, just a stone’s throw from Heysham nuclear power station, the Trade Unionists for Safe Nuclear Energy (TUSNE) held its final plenary of the year. Over two productive days, trade union representatives from GMB, Unite the Union and Prospect union, representing nuclear sites and supply chain workers across the UK, came together to discuss progress in the civil nuclear sector. ⚛️ Topics covered included: 🔹 The priorities and key issues facing workers from each union 🔹Nuclear development in Wales, including Great British Energy - Nuclear's deployment of Rolls-Royce SMRs at Wylfa 🔹Prospects for new nuclear in Scotland as Torness is scheduled to go offline in coming years 🔹The status of a UK geological disposal facility 🔹Deployment of new nuclear technologies including AMRs, SMRs and fusion We were also pleased to welcome speakers Lizzi Collinge MP and Leon Flexman from X-energy. Lizzi provided a candid update on her work advocating for a new Heysham nuclear plant in Parliament, highlighting the need to update regulation to attract investment while protecting workers. Leon shared X-energy’s UK plans, including the recent Hartlepool development in partnership with Centrica. It was fantastic to host trade union representatives in Morecambe and we look forward to ensuring the government continues to deliver for the 98,000+ workers in the UK’s civil nuclear sector. 👷 #Nuclear #NuclearEnergy

⚛️ Nuclear Regulatory Taskforce publishes its final report to support new nuclear development ⚛️ Today, the Nuclear Regulatory Taskforce has published its final report after being established by the Keir Starmer , the Prime Minister, to examine how nuclear regulation could be updated to support new nuclear development. The Taskforce highlights that the UK’s overly complex regulatory system has contributed to a “relative decline” in the country’s ability to deliver nuclear projects on time and at lower cost. Its report sets out 47 recommendations for government to accelerate delivery, reduce costs and strengthen safety. The recommendations cover key areas including simplification, risk management and proportionality, environmental assessment and permitting, the planning system, culture, capacity capability and innovation and international harmonisation. The APPG has welcomed the report and is pleased to see that it reflects several of the topics discussed with John Fingleton CBE, who leads the Taskforce, during our meeting in October. Charlotte Nichols MP, Labour Co-Chair of the APPG, also warmly welcomes the report in the quote below. ⬇️ The full report and further information can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eaBgpQ3y

⚛️ Cross-Party Support in Parliament for SMRs at Wylfa ⚛️ Yesterday, the House of Commons debated the Government’s announcement that SMRs will be built at Wylfa - a landmark moment for the future of nuclear in the UK. The debate was led by APPG member Llinos Medi MP, who pressed the government for clear timelines and firm commitments to ensure the project delivers for her constituency and secures the future of the skilled civil nuclear workforce in Wales. 👷♀️ Responding on behalf of the government, Minister for Energy Michael Shanks MP underlined strong cross-party support for new nuclear, congratulated Llinos on her hard work and advocacy, and reaffirmed that nuclear energy is “central to our clean power mission.” ⚡ In a rare moment of unity, MPs from Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru and Reform welcomed the announcement, reflecting a broad consensus that nuclear will be central to the UK’s economic and energy future. APPG members made valuable contributions throughout the debate, including: 🔹 Charlotte Nichols MP, Labour Co-Chair, pressing the government on plans for further gigawatt-scale projects across the UK. 🔹Lizzi Collinge MP, advocating for Heysham to play a key role in the UK’s golden nuclear future. 🔹Jonathan Brash MP, celebrating recent commitments to develop AMRs at Hartlepool. 🔹Liz Saville Roberts MP, calling for Trawsfynydd to play a central role in the government's data centre plans. A strong and constructive debate and a clear signal that nuclear has cross-party momentum behind it. 👏
