The Industry Safety Steering Group (ISSG) was formed in September 2018 to report on progress made by the built environment industry towards achieving culture change.

The ISSG, chaired by Dame Judith Hackitt, has produced its third annual report on the progress of the industry. It reports on the work of the ISSG from August 2020 to September 2021, during which the Group has heard from many organisations from across the industry and explored 3 themes:

  • leadership and collaboration
  • competence and capacity-building
  • responsibility and transparency

The report highlights areas of good practice, particularly in industry-wide initiatives, but finds that we are yet to see a critical mass of industry players demonstrating the leadership necessary to accelerate the pace of change and rebuild trust in the sector following the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

The government welcomes this report and its findings. We agree that the industry needs to do much more, and that government should support these efforts by recognising companies who are doing the right thing and shaming those who are failing to do so.
