A family were lucky to escape a blaze at their home uninjured say fire bosses after they found no working smoke alarms in the property.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service (WFRS) chiefs say that fortunately everyone was accounted for when crews arrived at the house in Kings View.

There were six 999 calls for help made to report the fire at the home at just before 4pm yesterday (September 25) and green watch from Nuneaton Fire Station responded.

Police blocked off part of the road in Grove Road so that the crew from Nuneaton as well as engines Bedworth and Atherstone could fight the flames.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was also called to the scene but there were no patients to treat.

The fire was in one of the bedrooms on the first floor and firefighters had to fight the flames using breathing apparatus, hose reels, covering jet and a positive pressure ventilation kit which was used to disperse smoke.

A WFRS spokesperson spoke of the importance of having working smoking alarms,

"Thankfully everyone was accounted for shortly after our arrival," the spokesperson said.

"Once the fire was out, crews checked over the property and found that there were no working smoke alarms in place.

"The family were very lucky. Smoke alarms are lifesavers."
