So, who's it going to be? The fourteenth Doctor Who?

The answer might well be Years and Years star Lydia West who is a strong bookmaker's favourite to take on the coveted role.

In a nutshell

It's that time again when the guessing and betting games begin as to who will be the nest Time Lord, and Lydia West has quickly become a bookmaker's favourite coming in ahead of other favourite Michael Sheen. West is currently listed at odds of 5/2 with Sheen at 3/1. But slightly ahead of both actors is frontrunner Omari Douglas 6/5.

Twenty-eight-year-old London-born actress West is to appear alongside Russell Tovey in the film Text for You, and with Mike Myers and Ken Jeong in forthcoming Netflix comedy series The Pentaverate.

Jodie Whitaker became the first female Time Lord when she took over the role from Peter Capaldi in 2017. Whitaker signalled her intent to leave the long-running show earlier this year.

So Who will it be?

But a betting woman or man might be swayed by returning showrunner Russell T. Davies who has a habit of working with the same actors multiple times. He did so with ninth and tenth Doctors Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant who had previously appeared in the show which will go into its 14th season next year.

While Welsh-born Sheen has never played the Time Lord, he's a firm favourite with fans to take on the role and did have a minor part as the voice of House in The Doctor's Wife which aired in 2011.

If the bookies are anything to go by it'll one of the three favourites. West and Omari Douglas both know each other through It's A Sin, and both are surprise favourites given that so many in the running are long established actors.

Douglas is set to join Jessie Buckley and Eddie Redmayne in a new stage production of Cabaret in London’s West End.

Bottom line

Only time will tell who it will be, but the next Time Lord is coming and we should know soon enough. Safe to say though Russell Brand and Domhnall Gleeson (both 80/1) won't be getting the keys to the Tardis.
