About the Pub
Historic Interest
The building dates from 1759, originally called the Black Horse. The Magazines Bowling Club was founded by 1840. Listed in Bagshaw's 1850 Directory as the Magazine Hotel, although still referred to in 1865 as the Black Horse in the records of Argyle Brewery (Oxton Road, Birkenhead) which held the pub on a lease. Argyle Brewery transferred the lease to Birkenhead Brewery in 1866. The freehold of the pub was put up for sale by auction in 1878. The pub later became a Bass house. The black and white photos show the pub in 1979 and 1992 and earlier.
