Yorkshire and North East - Maintenance schemes

The Aycliffe Interchange, junction 59, was opened to traffic in 1965 and is a concrete over bridge carrying the A167 over the A1(M).  Recently, through routine maintenance we identified that a section of the concrete bridge deck is in need of repair on the southern side of the junction. Since then we have been developing a scheme to carry out the necessary repairs. 

We are now ready to carry out the repairs and this will involve a full closure of the southern side of the roundabout for 10 weeks as well as night-time closures and a full weekend closure.

The work will include concrete repairs to the southern bridge as well as street lighting renewal and resurfacing.

The southern bridge requires significant repairs to maintain safety, allowing us to re-open both lanes and maintain the bridge for years to come. The investment in the lighting and resurfacing will improve journeys and maintain safety around the junction.

What are we going to be doing?

The work has now started, on Tuesday 2 April and should be complete by mid-Summer 2024.

The project involves three main phases:

• Phase 1 - Bridge deck repairs: Tuesday 2 April - July 2024

  Tuesday 2 April and Wednesday 3 April, overnight closures from 8pm to 6am. The southern side of the roundabout is now closed, as of Friday 5 April, for around 10 weeks to allow the concrete repairs. 

  We have installed narrow lanes on A1 northbound beneath the bridge with 50mph in place for safety, whilst we carry out the repairs on the bridge deck. 

During this phase we will be carrying out hydro-demolition of the existing bridge deck to remove the defective concrete. This is a very technical process and requires significant temporary work and cannot be done in overnight closures.

• Phase 2 - Lighting renewal: mid-May - mid - August 2024

Working around the concrete repairs, there will be additional night-time closures between 8pm - 6am

• Phase 3 - Resurfacing of the roundabout: July 2024

A full weekend closure from Friday 8pm till Monday 6am for one weekend in July 2024, dates to be confirmed.

What does this mean for you?

For road users

To carry out the work safely we will need to use a combination of full closures during the day and over-night.

During the closure, we’ll put diversions routes in place, which are detailed below.

Motorway traffic

For vehicles and drivers who are authorised to use the motorway, the diversion will take road users south on the A1(M) to junction 58, Burtree, before returning northbound on the A1(M) to junction 59 to continue north or to rejoin the A167. This diversion will add an additional 5 minutes of journey time.

Non-motorway traffic

For non-motorway traffic, the diversion is to use the A68, joining on to the A6072, before using B6444 to rejoin the A167. This diversion will add an additional 10 minutes of journey time.

We are resurfacing sections of the A61 between the Westwood junction and junction 36 of the M1.

In addition to the resurfacing we are going to to be carrying out maintenance to the bridge joints on the Tankersley Roundabout, M1 junction 36.

To do this safely we need to close the A61 Monday to Friday between 8pm and 6am with additional closures of the slip roads at junction 36.

It is currently planned that the following closures will be in place, subject to weather and any unplanned events:

A61 closure -  Monday 26 February - Friday 15 March, Monday to Friday, 8pm to 6am.

M1 junction 36 West side closure - Monday 11 - Wednesday 13 March, three nights, 8pm to 6am.

M1 junction 36 East side closure - Thursday 14 - Wednesday 20 March, weekdays only, 8pm to 6am.

Please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey. 

M1 junction 43 – 48 Concrete central barrier replacement

What are we doing?

We need to replace the wire rope central barrier with a concrete one, this is to improve safety for drivers.

The scheme has been split into 2 sections and will take around 16 months to complete.

The first section, between junctions 46 and 47 will start in March and is expected to last around 7 months.

The second section, between junctions 43 and 45, which also includes upgrading the LED lighting, will start in August and is expected to take 9 months.

What traffic management will be in place?

To do the work safely we need to close 1 lane on the north and southbound carriageways and the speed limit will be reduced to 50mph as sections of the barrier are removed.

The traffic management will start between junctions 46 and 47 with the first phase. As work progresses, we will extend the traffic management to include junctions 43 to 45. This allows us to reduce the overall duration of the work and maintain safety.

We advise all drivers to allow more time for your journey, with significant delays expected during the evening peak as people leave the Leeds area.

We apologise in advance for any disruption.

We ask drivers plan their journeys, to allow extra time and use alternates where possible.

Why are we replacing the barrier?

Concrete barriers are even stronger than metal ones and significantly reduce the risk of vehicles crossing over from one carriageway to another, improving safety and reducing the duration of incident-related congestion.

We’ll be carrying out essential maintenance work on a weather station on the A616, in the vicinity of Dark Lane.  

What we are doing and when 

We’ll be upgrading a weather station working overnight on selected dates between 8pm and 6am.  

Closures and diversions  

We will close the A616 to through traffic between Flouch Roundabout and Fox Valley Roundabout overnight between 8pm and 6am on  

• Monday 29 January to Thursday 1 February – 4 nights  
• Tuesday 27 February – 1 night  
• Tuesday 19 March – 1 night  

We may also need an additional closure to remove the traffic management later.  A fully signed diversion will be in place. 

There are a small number of properties within our closure and instructions have been sent by post, access will be maintained with operatives on-site during closures.

M621 Smools Lane Underpass - Parapet Replacement 

We're replacing life expired parapets on a bridge which carries the M621 over a footpath known as Smools Lane between M621 Junction 1 to M62 Junction 27. 

We will carry out this work within the same traffic management for the current M621 Junction 1 to 7 improvement work, to reduce the impact on customers.  We will work a mix of day and nights, including weekends. Some of the work we will do will be noisy, we aim to complete this part of the work during the day. 

We'll need to make some adjustments to the traffic management, but the work will be carried out behind the narrow lanes of the current improvement scheme. 

We will close the M621 overnight on the following dates to adjust the traffic management:-

• Anti clockwise closure between M621 J4 to M62 J27 - for 3 nights Mon 29 to Wed 31 Jan.
• Clockwise closure between M62 J27 and M621 J1 - for 3 nights Thurs 01 to Sat 03 Feb.

A fully signed diversion will be in place via Geldard Road (A62) for both sets of closures. 

We appreciate your patience while this important safety work is completed. 

We are back at Salters Brook Bridge following damage caused by a car hitting the barriers and bouncing onto the parapet on the opposite side. This follows a similar incident last year, which resulted in significant repairs to the stonework.

The bridge is currently under two-way traffic signals as temporary barriers are in place for safety. We continue to undertake repairs following investigations and require two overnight road closures, one to deliver and place the scaffolding and one to take it down at the end of the work.

We will close the A628 between Flouch Roundabout to Tintwistle from 9 pm to 5 am on 15/01/24 for one night and on 26/2/24, 9 pm until 5 am, to remove the traffic management.

These dates are subject to change due to weather conditions on this rural route.

Traffic calming measures including signage, appropriate speed limits and a safety barrier (one side of the bridge) are already in place however, we will review this to ensure no further measures are required. 

M62/B6114 Saddleworth Road - Scammonden Bridge - notice of routine maintenance work

We'll carry out routine maintenance work (welding) on Scammonden Bridge for three days starting Monday, 8th January. The M62 will remain fully open and is unaffected.

We will work during the day under two-way traffic lights on the B6114 Saddleworth Road while lane closures are in place.

The bridge is still accessible to vehicles and pedestrians during work. However, there may be times when the footway is temporarily unavailable, and the opposite footway needs to be used by walkers.

We’re providing an update on our work to repair a bridge spanning the M180 (near Outmill) following severe damage caused by a lorry hitting the underside of the structure, last year. 

As the damage was extensive and asbestos was present, we needed to take time to design, check and approve the work to repair the bridge. During this time, we closed lane 1 of the M180 westbound, to reduce the risk of further impacts on the damaged area. 

Following extensive investigations, we are now able to carry out the full repairs on the bridge which include concrete repairs, beam replacements, parapet replacements, new bridge joints, waterproofing and resurfacing. 

We aim to start work on Monday 15 January and estimate completion by Friday 28 June, subject to weather conditions under the following road closures.

• Full closure of Derrythorpe Road (the road carried by Mutton Lane Bridge) for the duration of the work Monday 15 January to Friday 28 June 2024.
• Lane 1 closure of the M180 westbound (already in place) for the duration of the work 
• A mix of overnight and weekend closures of the M180 in both directions, subject to weather conditions. 

Full signed diversions, agreed with the local authority, will be in place.

• Derrythorpe Road - go via West Butterwick using Clouds Lane, West Street and North Street in both directions. 
• M180 eastbound - leave Woodhouse junction 2, onto the A161, A18 until junction with M181 (retail park) then M181 re-joining the M180 at junction 3 eastbound. 
• M180 westbound - leave M180 junction 3 north onto the M181 until retail park junction with the A18, west onto A18 onto the junction with the A161, then south to re-join the M180 at junction 2.

We're replacing the traffic signals at the Lofthouse roundabout.

To do this safely we will put in place a series of overnight slip road closures and some short lane closures.

Closures will take place flexibly overnight from 8pm until 6am working Monday to Friday.  Occasionally, we may also have lane closures in place during the day, when required. 

Work will start on Monday 8 January 2024 and will last for around 12 weeks.

When closures are in place the following fully signed diversions will be in operation:

Closure of M62 westbound exit slip road at junction 29
Traffic intending to exit at the M62 junction 29 westbound exit slip will be diverted onto the M62 westbound to junction 28. At junction 28 traffic should take the sixth exit to merge onto the M62 eastbound then travel to junction 29 and take the eastbound exit slip.

Traffic intending to enter at the M62 junction 29 eastbound entry slip will be diverted to take the third exit at M62 junction 29 and merge onto the M62 westbound to junction 28. At junction 28 traffic should take the sixth exit to merge onto the M62 eastbound. Traffic will then continue on the eastbound past junction 29.

Traffic intending to exit at the M62 junction 29 eastbound exit slip will be diverted onto the M62 eastbound to junction 30. At junction 30 traffic should take the fourth exit to merge onto the M62 westbound then travel to junction 29 and take the westbound exit slip.

Closure of M1 northbound exit slip road at junction 42
Traffic intending to exit at the M1 junction 42 northbound exit slip will be diverted onto the M1 northbound to junction 44. At junction 44 traffic should take the fifth exit to merge onto the M1 southbound then travel to junction 42 and take the southbound exit slip.

Closure of M1 southbound entry slip road at junction 42
Traffic intending to enter at the M1 junction 42 southbound entry slip will be diverted to take the third exit at M1 junction 42 and merge onto the M1 northbound to junction 44. At junction 44 traffic should take the fifth exit to merge onto the M1 southbound. Traffic should then continue the southbound past junction 42.

Closure of Lofthouse roundabout eastern quadrant
Traffic intending to travel south on the eastern quadrant of the roundabout will be diverted onto the M62 eastbound to junction 30. At junction 30 traffic should take the fourth exit to merge onto the M62 westbound then travel to junction 29 and take the westbound exit slip.

Closure of Lofthouse roundabout western quadrant
Traffic intending to travel north on the western quadrant of the roundabout will be diverted onto the M62 westbound to junction 28. At junction 28 traffic should take the sixth exit to merge onto the M62 eastbound then travel to junction 29 and take the eastbound exit slip.

Closure of Lofthouse roundabout southern quadrant
Traffic intending to travel west on the southern quadrant of the roundabout will be diverted onto the M1 southbound to junction 41. At junction 41 traffic will take the fourth exit to merge onto the M1 northbound then travel to junction 42 and take the northbound exit slip.

We're installing a new equestrian crossing on the A616 near Underbank Reservoir. At the same time we will also make improvements to the pavement and signage nearby.

Providing this crossing will ensure horses, riders and cyclists remain safe while connecting two parts of a local bridal way. 

We aim to start this work on Monday 4 September - so we can set up traffic management there will be full night time closures on the A616 on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 September, 8pm until 6am. 

We will then work under hard shoulder, layby and lane closures 24/7 - the road will remain open to traffic until we remove the traffic management at the end of the work. We will do this overnight under two full road closures. Some footpaths will be closed while we work and bus stops in the area will be suspended. 

During closures a fully signed vehicle diversion will be in place. 

Closure of A616 eastbound and westbound from Flouch Roundabout to Fox Valley Way Roundabout.

Traffic intending to travel west on A616 to Flouch Roundabout shall be diverted onto the A629 northbound at Wortley junction and continue on the A629 northbound to its junction with Well House Lane. At the junction turn left onto Well House Lane and continue to Well House Lane/B6462 junction. At the junction turn left onto B6462 and continue to B6462/A628 junction. At the junction turn right onto A628 and continue to A628/A616 junction (Flouch Roundabout) where the diversion ends.

Traffic intending to travel east on A616 to Fox Valley Way Roundabout shall be diverted onto the A628 eastbound at Flouch Roundabout and continue on the A628 eastbound to its junction with B6462. At the junction turn left onto B6462 and continue to B6462/A629 junction. At the junction turn right onto A629 and continue to A629/A616 (Wortley Junction) where the diversion ends.

Update:- due to delayed shifts caused by wet weather, the completion date for work on the westbound carriageway which was originally the end of November, will now be January 2024.  We apologise for the disruption caused by this delay - resurfacing requires dry weather to allow the road surface to set. 

We plan to start again on 8th January on the M62 westbound J27 -J26. We will work overnight under a full westbound closure between 8 pm and 6 am on the 8th, 9th, 10th, 13th, and 14th of January - subject to weather conditions.

A fully signed diversion will be in place with eastbound traffic leaving the M62 at junction 26, onto the A58 and A650 back onto the M62 at junction 27. Westbound will use the same diversion in reverse.

What are we doing?

Safety improvements to 10 gaps in the central reserve between Bowes and the Cumbria border. All gaps, except Rowton Bridge at the Cumbria border, will remain open. New turning bans are proposed where there is no safe facility to reduce speed (no deceleration lane) or insufficient space to accommodate a turning area next to the carriageway. Unless specifically listed below, all other movements will remain available for use. Locations where U-turning is or will be allowed are also noted. Our proposed work includes:

We are closing the A1 Junction 74 Scotswood - southbound exit slip overnight between 8pm and 6am, from Monday 29 January to Monday 5 February.

This is to allow resurfacing.

Local diversions will be in place.

We will be carrying out essential maintenance work on the A66 immediately east of Blackwell Roundabout. The drainage, access road surfaces, and footpath are showing signs of wear and tear and require attention. 

Work will take place over-night 8pm to 6am Monday through Friday from 5 February 2024 and will take approximately 5 weeks to complete.  Traffic Lights will be in place over-night. Please allow extra time for your journey. 

Please note that all planned work is subject to change due to adverse weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.  

We are closing the A1 Junction 79 Gosforth - northbound exit slip overnight between 8pm and 6am, from Tuesday 6 to Sunday 11 February.

This is to allow resurfacing.

Local diversions will be in place.

We are replacing all markings and studs between A1M Redhouse J38 to Warmsworth J36 - Southbound 

From March 1 we will be working 5 shifts of full overnight closures of the A1M between J38 Redhouse and J37 Marr with signed diversions using A638 and A635.

Next 7 shifts of overnight closures between A1M J37 Marr to J36 Warmsworth with signed diversions using A635 and A630.

Followed by junction 36 and the southbound carriageway, with overnight closures from A1M junction 36 Warmsworth to junction 35 Wadworth using signed diversions on the  A630 – A18 – A6182 – M18 junction 3 back to junction 35 Wadworth.

Please allow extra time for your journey. 

The A19 southbound will be resurfaced between the junctions with the A181 Wellfield Interchange and the A179 at Sheraton. Starting Tuesday 2 April for six weeks, weather permitting. 

The road will be closed overnight between 8pm and 6am the following morning, each night except for Saturdays.

During the day, a 50mph speed limit will be in place.  

Motorists heading for the A19 southbound in this area should follow the signed diversion via the B1320 Burnhope Way, Surtees Road and Yoden Way to Horden. They should then travel via the A1086 to the A179 and re-join the A19 at the Sheraton Interchange. 

We’re carrying out this work overnight, when traffic levels are at their lightest, to keep any disruption to a minimum. However, we do strongly advise anyone planning to travel on this route to allow extra time for their journeys and follow the signposted diversions – and not their satnavs.

The Tenter Hill Bridge, which carries Thorner Road over the A1(M) near Wetherby, will have its steel beams repainted. Starting Thursday 21 March.

The existing paint needs to be replaced to protect key elements from deterioration.  At the same time, we will be carrying out further maintenance on the A1(M) in this area.  

The scheme will be divided into two sections. The first will take place on the northbound side of the bridge between junctions 44 (Bramham) and 45 (Grange Moor).  

The southbound section will then be repainted from Wednesday 10 April, with this part of the scheme likely to last for up to three weeks. 

To ensure this is carried out safely, a series of full overnight closures will be in place on the A1(M).  

Closures and diversions  

The overnight closures will begin on Thursday 21 March, on the A1(M) northbound between junctions 44 (Bramham) and 45 (Boston Spa). The work on this section is expected to be carried out over a period of up to three weeks. During these nights, the southbound carriageway will remain open. 

From Wednesday 10 April, this work will switch to the southbound side, with overnight closures in place on the A1M southbound between junctions 45 and 44 for up to three weeks. The northbound side will stay open. 

The closures will be in place each night, Monday to Friday, and every other weekend, between 8pm and 6am. The A1(M) will remain open during the day, and no road closures will take place over the Easter weekend.  

A fully-signed diversion will be in place. The northbound diversion will be via Paradise Way, Thorner Road and West Woods Road, with the route reversed for the southbound work. Drivers are advised to follow the diversions and not rely on their satnavs.

We are carrying out lighting renewals on the A61 between the A616 and M1.

The A61 will be closed for 2 nights 18 and 19 March from 8pm to 6am to allow the work to take place. 

Access for local residents will be maintained. 

Local signed diversions will be in place via the A616 / M1 diversion route and the remaining relevant non-motorised users will follow the local diversion route.

We are going to be resurfacing the A19 - A172 Tontine northbound slip roads.

Overnight road closures will be in place between 8pm and 6am, with local signed diversions in place.

During the day a 40mph speed limit will be in place for safety as vehicles will be running on a temporary  road surface.

The work will take place in 2 phases. 

Phase 1 - Sunday 24 March 2024 for 4 nights.

Phase 2 - Tuesday 2 April 2024 for 4 night

We will be closing the southbound exit slip at junction 5 for 5 nights 3, 4 and 5, then 8 and 9 April the M18 will remain open and traffic will be directed to the next junction south junction 4 and back up for services and M180 eastbound.

We also have 2 nights of work on the northern overbridge on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 April, traffic will be diverted up the M18 to junction 6 and back down to junction 5 for access back to M180 eastbound.

On Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 April we will be closing the M18 between junction 3 and 2 for 2 nights and diverting traffic through Doncaster and back onto the A1M at junction 36 Warmsworth

We are replacing the bridge joints and resurfacing the bridge deck.

To do this safely we need to close the B6123 over Scotchman Lane Bridge with traffic to the north and south of the bridge diverted as follows:

• North from B6123 via A650 Bruntcliffe Road, A643 Howden Clough Road, A62 Huddersfield Road and A652 Bradford Road, finally back on B6123 at Batley.  Vice versa.
• South from B6123 towards Batley then via A652, Soothill Lane B6124, Leeds Rd B653, finally back on the A650.  Vice versa.

Works shall be carried out during weekend daytime working from 8pm Friday 19 April to 6am Monday 22 April.

Signed diversions will be in place. Please allow extra time for your journey. 

We need to carry out essential resurfacing work and drainage repairs on two roundabouts on the A66 near Darlington from Monday 15 April.

The improvements are being made at the A66’s junctions with the A1150 at Little Burdon, and with the B6279 near Lingfield (Tornado Way).

To keep drivers and the workforce safe while these improvements are carried out, there will be overnight closures on the A66 between the two junctions, both north and southbound. The closures will be in place each weeknight, between 8pm and 6am the following morning, between 15 and 22 April. The road will remain open on Saturday and Sunday nights.

The closures are also due on the A66 westbound between Sadberge Road and Little Burdon Roundabout, as well as the A66 westbound entry and exit slip roads at Sadberge Road/Middleton Road and side roads adjacent to the A1150 carriageway at Stockton Road.

Fully signed diversions will be in place throughout the work. Access will be maintained at all times to properties accessible only from the A66.

We need to resurface the westbound carriageway between Askham Bar to Askham Bryan.

To do this safely we will be closing the westbound carriageway from 8pm to 6am Sunday to Friday nights from Monday 15 April until Friday 3 May.
