The Challenges of Incorporating Recycled Content in Plastics Packaging 2024

This half-day online seminar will provide a detailed insight into the latest developments in incorporating recycled content into plastics packaging. 

Featuring presentations from expert speakers on topics including changes in legislation, technical barriers to incorporating recycled content and industry case studies the seminar this online event will provide an overview of the various technological innovations to certify, verify and quantify recycled content and will be of interest to all stakeholders in the supply chain including processors, brands, retailers, raw material suppliers and recyclers.

All attendees will also receive full recordings of our 2023 and 2022 events, listen to over 12 additional archived sessions.

  • 13.05Overview of the Imports and Exports of Material and Current Infrastructure

    Tom McBeth, Recoup

    In this session Tom McBeth will provide an overview of the imports and exports of material. He will also reference current infrastructure issues for recycled content.

    Biography

    Tom provides data analysis and reporting for the RECOUP Household Plastics Collection Survey and other RECOUP research and reports. In addition to data analysis and reporting, Tom also has knowledge of financial systems, organisation logistics, and engagement and communications on an individual and organisational level. Tom has experience of working in communications and media environments and is NCTJ qualified (Master of Journalism) and can construct, and design creative representations of information, reports and infographics. By providing this bespoke level of support, Tom will also collate, monitor and analyse data and information where needed, including undertaking activities relating to material composition analysis.

  • 13.30An Update on Food Contact Legislation - Where Are We Now?

    Adam Bolsover, Senior R&D Engineer, Nelipak

    In this session Adam will provide the audience with his insight into the current situation with food contact legislation as well as what we can expect from the future.

    Biography

    Adam Bolsover is the Senior R&D Engineer for Nelipak and Chair of the Technical and Environmental Committee for the BPF Plastics and Flexible Packaging Group. He studied at the University of Nottingham, where he graduated with a Master in Science in Chemistry, then at the University of Chester, where he graduated with a Post Graduate Certificate in Advances in Food and Beverage Packaging and then Quantic School of Business and Technology, where he graduated with an Executive Master of Business Administration in Strategic Leadership with Honors (top 10% of class). He is currently reading a Master of Science at International University of Applied Science in Artificial Intelligence. His career focusing on Research and Development, Technical Management and Food Contact Compliance has spanned the Packaging Industry, including, Ultimate Packaging (now ProAmpac), Coveris, and FFP (now Constantia) and Mondi.

    Silvia Freni Sterrantino, Senior Legal & Regulatory Affairs Manager, EUPC

    Our speaker will provide an insight into what European legislation on incorporating recycled content is currently looking like and what future developments we can expect. She will explore the current state of the PPWR legislation (focusing on food contact issues) and its status within the process in the EU.

    Biography

    Silvia Freni Sterrantino is Senior Legal Affairs Manager at European Plastics Converters. Before joining EuPC, she worked as an attorney in leading European law firms and in the Directorate-General for Competition of the European Commission. Admitted to the Italian Bar Association as a qualified attorney, she studied law at the universities of Siena, Cambridge and London, where she earned a LL.M. in Competition Law & IP at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

    Mireia Boada, Project Manager, Plastics Recyclers Europe

    In this presentation Mireia Boada will explore the latest developments in certification of mechanical recycling, exploring physical traceability of recycled plastics

    Biography

    Mireia Boada is Project Manager at Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE), association promoting plastics circularity in the EU. She specialises in plastics recycling, traceability of recycled plastics, certifications, and standardisation in plastics, packaging and chain of custody.

    Mireia coordinates the development and maintenance of the certifications for recycling processes and use of recycled plastics in RecyClass, flagship initiative within PRE. 

    Mireia is a biologist and holds a master’s degree in Environmental, Economic and Social Sustainability from the UAB in Barcelona.

    Our speaker will explore the latest developments in Mass balance and why this is important for the plastics industry.

    Biography

    Hari is a Junior System Manager at Interna4onal Sustainability and Carbon Cer4fica4on (ISCC). Hari works for the ISCC PLUS Scheme, which is a voluntary scheme that is applicable for the bioeconomy and circular economy for food, feed, chemicals, plas4cs, packaging, tex4les and renewable feedstock derived from a process using renewable energy sources. Hari’s main focus areas are Chain of Custody Op4ons including Mass Balance, Traceability and Material screening for cer4fica4on.

    In this session our speaker will provide his expert opinion on what in their views are the technical barriers to incorporating recycled content, how serious these barriers are and how and when they will be overcome.

    Laura Gil Carrera, the LEGO Group

    In this session our speaker will explore the LEGO Groups experience of trying to incorporate recycled content into Lego bricks and ultimately why they decided not to go ahead with this.

    Biography

    Laura works as Senior Manager in Environmental Sustainability at the LEGO Group where she is part of driving the LEGO Group’s strategy on sustainable and circular products. Laura holds a PhD in bioprocess and environmental sciences and engineering and has significant experience in academia and industry, developing processes and technologies for waste valorization and biochemicals production.”
